If you have been around fishing for a while, then you know that the absolute best time to go on the prowl for bass is during the spring months. During these months, the bass are preparing for their annual spawn, and they are compelled by instinct to go on a gluttonous binge right before they spawn. When they are spawning, you will be able to find bass that are in two feet of water, right up in the shallows where you can nab them particularly easily.
Spring bass fishing right before they begin to spawn is probably the very best time to catch them. The females know that they are going to be exhausted after they lay their eggs, and therefore they need the nourishment to make sure they have enough nutrients to make it through the downtime they’ll need after the spawn. So as the water temp gets above 50 degrees, they will move into the shallows and begin to feed. But until the water temperature gets into the mid fifties, you’ll have a tough time catching them. When you are in the middle of the spawn, try combing the shallows and tossing your baits into place you suspect will have nests. They are the ones that guard the nests, and if you are able to get your bait close enough to the nest, often you can get a defensive strike out of the male bass. Just remember that the males are the ones that guard the nest, and the sows will have retreated back into deeper water for recovery.
After the spawn can also yield some excellent fishing. After the water temperature gets above 70 degrees, the spawn is over, and the bass will return to a normal feed pattern. You’ll find them in the shallows during the morning and evening, and retreating to cooler water during the heat of the day.
